Introducing People of Portside. Get to know the faces that make up Portside Wharf and who Eat, Live and Play local every day. This month we interviewed Diana Morzone, the owner of Cruisers Alfresco, and learnt a little bit about her and the business she created at Portside Wharf.

Diana, tell us a little bit about the history of your business?

We opened Mahjongg Café in 2008 and underwent refurbishment in 2012, where we reopened as Cruisers Café Bar and Grill. In 2017, we underwent refurbishment again and reopened as Cruisers Alfresco. From our vantage point, at the entrance to Portside Wharf, we have watched the area undergo an amazing transformation over those 10 years.

How long has your business been at Portside Wharf?

We have been in business at Portside Wharf for 10 years.

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is binge-watching TV with a tub of the most decadent ice-cream I can find!

Tell us a bit about your recent refurbishment?

We wanted to create a lovely outdoor dining area, surrounded by landscaping. We also want to make the most of our beautiful climate! That is why we chose the new name of Cruisers Alfresco after we refurbished.

What is something interesting that we might not know about you?

I was a chef for 10 years but these days I only go back into the kitchen to work on new dessert creations for our cake cabinet.

If you could invite three people – dead or alive – to dinner, who would you invite and why?

My father, he died fifteen years ago, and I would love to introduce him to my fiancée and business partner Michael

What’s some insider knowledge that only people in your line of work have?

There is a worrying number of processed products finding their way onto café menus such as pre-cooked, heat and serve, packet mixes, pre-crumbed and pre-battered products to name a few.

Michael and I refuse to go down the processed food path and we are always striving to bring our customers the freshest unprocessed food.

What’s your morning routine?

No matter how early I start, I always give myself fifteen minutes to sit down with a strong black coffee and watch the news on the ABC. Then I can hit the ground running.

What was cool when you were young but isn’t cool now?

Big hair, shoulder pads and Depeche Mode. Uh-oh, now I’m really showing my age!

What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Can be food or drink.

Lobster Benedict and a glass of champagne!! My partner, Michael made it for my birthday and we loved it so much we are introducing it for a Sunday brunch special.
